The Main Stem of the Rancocas

The communities on the south bank of the Main Stem are best explored by starting at Amico Island close to the Riverside boundry and connecting with Bridgeboro Road (Rt. 613) in Riverside and then connecting with Creek Rd. (Rt. 636) below Rt. 130 in Delran, continuing into Moorestown and then into Mt. Laurel. At Centerton, turn left onto Bridge Street, crossing the Rancocas into Willingboro. Turn left onto Rt. 626 (Beverly-Rancocas Road) and take it through Willingboro to Rt. 130, turning left and proceeding to Bridgeboro Road, where you take a right, connecting again with Creek Road (right), passing Pennington Park in Delanco, and ending in the vicinity of Hawk Island.

The North Branch of the Rancocas

The communities on the North Branch include Westampton (Timbuctoo), Hainesport, Mount Holly, Eastampton (Smithville), Southampton (Ewansville) and Pemberton (Birmingham, Pemberton Boro, New Lisbon, Browns Mills).

We begin by exploring the north bank of the north branch. Our route begins on Beverly-Rancocas Road (Rt. 626) at Rancocas Park. Continue along Rt. 626, turning right onto Church St. at Timbuctoo. Return to Rt. 626, crossing the Mt. Holly Bypass into Mt. Holly. Navigate through Mt. Holly, leaving via Mill St. onto Mt. Holly-Smithville Road. Turn right onto Smithville Road, into Smithville Park. Exit the park and continue on Smithville Rd. to Routh 38. Take Rt. 38 east, crossing Rt. 206, continuing to Birmingham Rd., where you turn left. Cross the Rancocas in Birmingham and continue north to North Pemberton Road (Rt. 630). Turn right onto Arney's Mt. Road (Rt. 668) and continue into the village of Pemberton via Rt. 616 (Hanover St.). Turn left onto Rt. 687, Pemberton-Browns Mills Rd. This takes you to Burlington County College. There is access to the Rancocas on the college campus (canoe launch). Here a decision can be made to explore the Rancocas further upstream to Browns Mills. Return to the Village of Pemberton via Pemberton-Browns Mills Road, and connect to Rt. 530 (So. Pemberton Rd.) at the intersection (Burger King - Dunkin Donuts). Turn right onto South Pemberton Road and proceed west, back to Route 206. Here you can go north on Rt. 206 to explore the village of Ewansville on the right. This completes your exploration of the North Branch of the Rancocas. The only venue not visited was Long Bridge Park, which can be accessed from the Mt. Holly Bypass or from Marne Highway, via Deacon Road.

  • Historic sites throughout Mt. Holly: Historic Court House, Prison Museum, churches, parks, Mill Dam, Fountain Square, historic homes (John Woolman Memorial, Steven Girard Home, Budd House), Iron Works Hill monument, St. Andrew's Cemetery, Rancocas Valley H.S., Brainerd St. One-Room Schoolhouse, Quaker Meeting, Three Tuns Tavern, Relief Fire House, Shinn-Curtis Log House, Hack's Canoe rental facility

  • Historic sites throughout Pemberton, including the Lion Fountain; Lockup, historic homes, the mill that the Rancocas Creek once powered
  • Flora and fauna along the Rails to Trails nature path.
  • Rancocas nature scenes on the grounds of Burlington County College
  • Fenwick Manor in New Lisbon (home of Elizabeth White)
  • Scenes along the Rancocas in Ewansville, Southampton, including the little collection of summer cottages along the creek
  • Flora and Fauna at Long Bridge Park in Hainesport

The South Branch of the Rancocas

Finally, the communities on the South Branch include Mount Laurel, Hainesport (Rancocas Heights), Lumberton (Ironwood Outdoor Center, Eayrestown), Southampton (Vincentown), Medford (Kirby's Mill).

Our driving route will begin in Mt. Laurel at Rancocas Woods along Marne Highway (Route 537). Explore the village of Rancocas Woods. Continue east on Marne Highway through Hainesport. Turn right at Dunleavy's onto Hainesport-Lumberton Road. Continue into the village of Lumberton. Turn onto Rt. 641 (East Landing St.) and continue into Vincentown. After exploring Vincentown, you may wish to explore the Southwest Branch of the Rancocs by heading down Church Road (Rt. 616) to Kirby's Mill.

Suggested South Branch Venues (in the order of the route described above).

  • Scenes in the Village of shops in Rancocas Woods
  • Log Cabin neighborhoods of Rancocas Woods
  • Rancocas shore scenes in Hainesport at the site of the former Flo's Lakeside Tavern (driving east, turn left off Marne Highway onto New York Ave to get to the creekside area)
  • The wharf along the Rancocas in Hainesport
  • The Barclay Haines home (now Winzinger's) in Hainesport
  • Community and creekside scenes in Lumberton (including gazebo)
  • Old cross-Rancocas railway bridge in Lumberton
