CIVIL WAR SESQUICENTENNIAL:

1. SESQUICENTENNIAL (150 YEARS) OF THE CIVIL WAR - The New Jersey Civil War 150th Anniversary Committee plays a preeminent role in our state’s observation and commemoration of New Jersey’s part in the Civil War.  Through the committee’s service there will be increased awareness (both current and future) and accurate recognition of the sacrifices and contributions of the people of New Jersey during this defining time in American History - Here is a link to the Commission's Official web site: New Jersey's Official Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee.

The New York Times has a great website with a Civil War Timeline which chronicles the events of the Civil War by date, providing news articles and editorials from the newspaper reporting on the actual events. Link here:

Decades of growing strife between North and South erupted in civil war on April 12, 1861, when Confederate artillery opened fire on this Federal fort in Charleston Harbor. Fort Sumter surrendered 34 hours later. Union forces would try for nearly four years to take it back.

All of these evnts took place 150 years ago on the date indicated:

Jan. 9 - Mississippi seceded from the Union.

Jan. 10 - Florida seceded from the Union.

Jan. 11 - Alabama seceded from the Unon.

Jan. 19 - Georgia seceded from the Union.

Jan. 21 - Jefferson Davis resigned from the U.S. Senate.

Jan. 26 - Louisiana seceded from the Union

Feb. 1 - Texas voted to secede from the Union. (Officially seceded Mar. 2)

Feb. 4 - The Confederate States of America was founded, and a provisional government established in Montgomery, Alabama.

Feb. 18 - Jefferson Davis inaugurated as President of the Confed4eracy.

Mar. 2 - Texas officially seceded from the Union.

Mar. 4 - Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated as the 16th President of the USA

Mar. 11 - The Constitution of the Confederate States of America was adopted at the Confederate convention in Montgomery, Alabama

April 12 - Firing on Ft. Sumter.

March 1 - 50th anniverary of establishment of Peace Corps by John F. Kennedy (1961)

March 3 - 80th anniversary: adoption of Star Spangled Banner as the national anthem (1931)
